Swing, explained: why your beats sound stiff
The one control that separates a grid from a groove — what it actually does to the timing, and how much of it to use.
You programmed the pattern right. The kick is on the one, the snare is on the two and the four, the hats are running sixteenths. It still sounds like a machine reading a spreadsheet.
The missing piece is almost always swing.
What swing actually does
A sixteen-step bar divides into sixteen equal slices. Every note lands exactly on a slice boundary. That is mathematically correct and musically dead, because no human has ever played sixteen perfectly even notes in their life.
Swing delays the off-beat steps — the even-numbered ones, the “and” of each beat — while leaving the on-beats where they are. The downbeats stay locked, so the pattern still feels solid; the notes between them drift late, so the pattern starts to breathe.
At 0% swing, every step is evenly spaced:
1 . 2 . 3 . 4 . 5 . 6 . 7 . 8 .
At around 55%, the off-beats slide toward the following downbeat:
1 .. 2 .. 3 .. 4 .. 5 .. 6 .. 7 .. 8
The gap before an off-beat gets longer, the gap after it gets shorter. That long-short-long-short pattern is what your ear hears as groove.
How much to use
Swing is usually expressed as a percentage, where 50% means “no swing” on some machines and 0% means the same thing on others. Skunk Audio uses 0–100%, where 0 is a straight grid and 100 pushes the off-beat two thirds of the way to the next step.
Rough starting points:
- 0–15% — Straight, or nearly. House, techno, most modern trap. Enough to take the edge off without anyone noticing it is there.
- 20–35% — Where hip hop lives. Noticeable, still tight.
- 35–55% — Heavy shuffle. Boom bap, UK garage, anything that wants to limp deliberately.
- Above 60% — Almost triplet feel. It stops sounding like swing and starts sounding like a different rhythm entirely. Occasionally what you want.
The mistake nearly everyone makes is going too far on the first try, deciding swing sounds wrong, and turning it off. Start at 20% and creep up. The moment it goes from “groove” to “broken” is usually only a few percent wide.
Swing is not the same as being late
Two things get confused here.
Swing is a rhythmic subdivision. It shifts specific steps by a predictable amount, every bar, forever. It is a musical choice.
Timing humanisation is random jitter — every note nudged a millisecond or two in either direction. It makes a pattern sound played rather than programmed, but it does not create groove. It just blurs the edges.
They solve different problems and they stack. A pattern with swing and no humanisation sounds like a drum machine with a groove, which is a completely legitimate sound — most of the records you love are exactly that. A pattern with humanisation and no swing sounds like a very slightly sloppy spreadsheet.
Where to apply it
Swing applies to the whole pattern in most machines, including this one, and that is usually right. But the part that sells swing is almost always the hats — they run at the fastest subdivision, so they hit the off-beats most often, so they show the delay most clearly.
If you want to hear what swing is doing, solo the hats and sweep the control. Then bring the kick back in. The kick has not moved at all, which is exactly why the whole thing suddenly locks.
